ROM Birmingham Faith Leaders’ Training

Aina Khan OBE, Founder and Director, is delighted to invite you to ROM’s Faith Leaders’ Training from 2pm to 4.30pm on Monday, 11 November 2019 at Hallmark Hotel Birmingham Strathallan, 225 Hagley Rd, Birmingham B16 9RY.
The training: delivered by Aina Khan OBE, Adeel Hussain and Imam Osman Sheikh, will give faith leaders the opportunity to learn the aims and objectives of the ROM Campaign and to understand the benefits of registering religious marriages. There will also be a Q&A where attendees will have an opportunity to put forward questions and concerns to the expert trainers.
A legal perspective: Aina Khan OBE, an international family lawyer, will train attendees on the current position of the law of England and Wales with a review of where the law needs to be to ensure equality in the law in the recognition of religious marriages.
A civil perspective: Adeel Hussain, Registration Operations Manager of the London Borough of Lambeth, will train attendees on the current picture of registrations of religious marriages and what faith leaders and places of worship can do in order to conduct civil marriages.
An Islamic perspective: Imam Osman Sheikh, who has studied classical Fiqh, is a member of the George Eliot Hospital Chaplaincy team with over 30 years’ experience in family matters, conflict resolution and performing Nikah and matrimonial support services, will train attendees on the concept of Nikah in Islam, how faith leaders can support the ROM Campaign, such as by pledging to become Registrars. Imam Osman will be available to address any concerns faith leaders may have.
Other trainers and details to be announced. Training packs will be distributed to confirmed attendees on the day.
2-3pm – Registration and hot refreshments served.
3-4.30pm – Training and Q&A.
5-6pm – Networking and filming with attendees, with hot refreshments served.
Prayer facility will be provided. Asr is expected at approx. 2.32pm and Maghrib expected at approx. 4.21pm.

ROM is a two-pronged campaign that aims to raise awareness of the lack of legal protection for couples in unregistered religious marriages and lobbies for reform of the Marriage Act 1949 for all religious marriages to be legally registered.
